A son was born in December 1879 (later to become a physician) and a daughter arrived in 1881 (later to marry a Baptist minister). 20 Murray’s hard work behind the plow began to pay off. Webster’s strength and Brayton’s weakness grew even more obvious when the Credentials Committee recommended the seating of all the Webster supporters except those from Berkeley County. Murray protested against giving Brayton even this tidbit. In rebuttal, several speakers accused Murray of having run for Congress on the color line and of now trying to punish Berkeley for not swallowing it. The Brayton delegation from Berkeley County was seated despite Murray’s protest. It was a tiny island in a sea of Webster supporters.
